Licensure - Examination Information
Applications submitted in error OR not approved for eligibility are non-refundable. Please be sure to follow the steps below, step-by-step to avoid submission of an application that is not eligible for processing.
As of October 1, 2017 - Initial Exam applications that are received will be considered Null and Void after 6 months.
As of May 3, 2018 - Applicants educated in the United States may take the examination a maximum of three times within three years of first being eligible for to sit for the examination. Applicants educated outside of the United States may take the examination a maximum of three times within three years of their initial New Mexico application for licensure through examination.
Requirements: Per Regulation 16.12.2.10 (A) Prerequisites for licensure of registered nurses and license practical nurses by examination in New Mexico. (1) Completion of and eligible for graduation from a board approved course of study for the preparation of registered nurses or practical nurses
- If you are currently a resident in a Compact state you must apply for examination with that State Board of Nursing. For a Complete list of the current Licensure Compact states visit: NCSBN.org
- It is the responsibility of the applicant to assure that all application requirements are met and documents are received by the NM Board Of Nursing prior to the expiration of the application.
Domestic Educated Nurses:
Step 1: Official Transcripts: Upon completion of Nursing Program, applicant must request official transcripts to be sent to the New Mexico Board of Nursing. We accept electronic transcripts; we prefer Parchment and E-Scrip Safe. Applicants educated in New Mexico may have their education verified through the Affidavit of Graduation Portal as part of the application process.
Step 2: Complete Criminal Background Check
Step 3: Register for Pearson VUE. You may register by telephone (1-866-496-2539) or by Internet (http://www.pearsonvue.com/nclex) by using a valid credit card. Reminders are not sent out.
Step 4: Submit an Examination Application and fee. The New Mexico Board of Nursing (BON) only accepts on-line applications.
- Once the file is reviewed and determined complete by the Board, you will receive your ATT from Pearson VUE. Your ATT will be sent by email from Pearson VUE. If an email is not provided it will be mailed to the address indicated at registration

Internationally Educated Nurses::
International applicants are required to complete the following application requirements.
Step 1: Evaluation completed by one of the three(3) evaluation companies: Your evaluation and English results should arrive to the board prior to submitting the Examination Application to the New Mexico Board of Nursing. You would want to communicate with the Credential Agency selected and request a notification that your evaluation is complete so that you know when it is time to proceed with the additional application requirements.

- English proficiency, if applicable
- Internationally educated nurses must demonstrate English Competency. This can be demonstrated through successful completion of an approved English Competency exam such as:
- Successful completion of a nursing program that is given in English in another country or
- A passing score on a nursing examination which is given in English in another country or agencies which indicates successful completion of TOEFL (minimum score of 540), TOEFL IBT (minimum score of 84 overall, with a minimum speaking score of a 26) TOEIC (minimum score of 725), or IELTS (minimum score of 6.5 overall, with 7.0 in the spoken portion)

Domestic and International Re-Examination
Your application will expire and is considered null and void 6 months from the date your initial application was submitted. If your application has not expired and you have received a notification that you did not pass, you are considered automatically eligible by re-examination per NMAC 16.12.2.10

Special Accommodations
License examination candidates with a disability as defined by the American with Disabilities Act who wish to request modifications in the security measures for the NCLEX RN or the NCLEX LPN. This should be done concurrently with the application for licensure to ensure that accommodations are received without delay. The following documentation will be needed.
- Letter from the applicant specifying the reason and the accommodation needed
- Letter from specialist specifying the diagnosis and type of accommodation needed.
- Letter from the school stating the reason and type of accommodation they provided
Permit To Practice
Graduate nurses may request and may be approved for Graduate Nurse Permits. The Examination Application for licensure must be received at the Board of Nursing within twelve (12) weeks of graduation.
The prospective employer must submit a letter of verification of intent to hire, on letterhead, indicating the institution name, and RN’s name, and license number who will be responsible to assure that you practice under Direct RN Supervision. (Direct Supervision is defined per 16.12.2.10 NMAC.)
- Permits to practice are issued directly to a New Mexico employer. You must sign your permit to practice prior to employment as a GN/GPN. Contact your employer for additional information. The permit to practice will be sent directly to the NM Employer, either through email or regular mail.
- Permits to practice will not be issued for applicants who declare residency in other compact states.
- A permit-to-practice is valid for six (6) months from the date of application or until examination results are issued by the NM Board.
- A permit is VOID if applicant fails the examination or fails to take the examination within 6 months after graduation.
- Allow at least three (3) weeks for processing a permit to practice from the receipt of a completed file. A completed file for a permit includes the exam application to the NM Board of Nursing; Certification of Eligibility of Nursing Program or official transcript; fingerprint cards; forms; fee and letter of intent to hire.
